Synopsis

A genre-busting postapocalyptic first novel—a page-turning adventure channeling Animal Farm as imagined by Cormac McCarthyThe "war with no name" has begun; its goal, human extinction. The instigator of this war is the Colony, a race of intelligent ants who, for thousands of years, have been silently building an army that will forever eradicate the destructive, oppressive humans. Under the Colony's watchful eye, this utopia will be free of the humans' penchant for violence, exploitation, and religious superstition. The final step in the Colony's war effort is the transformation of surface animals into high-functioning two-legged beings who will rise up and kill their masters.Former house cat turned war hero Mort(e) is famous for taking on the most dangerous missions and fighting the dreaded human bioweapon EMSAH. But the true motivation behind Mort(e)'s recklessness is his ongoing search for a pretransformation friend—a dog named Sheba. When he receives a mysterious message from the dwindling human resistance claiming Sheba is alive, he begins a journey that will take him from the remaining human strongholds to the heart of the Colony, where he will discover the source of EMSAH and learn the ultimate fate of all earth's creatures.

This is a review of all three books in the War with No Name series: Mort(e), Culdesac and D’Arc. This series is an interesting new spin on Planet of the Apes. It surrounds a war between evolved animals and humans. The greatest foe of the humans, responsible for the mutation of the animals, is a giant......more

This book should come with a warning: if you share a home with four-legged companions, watch out. I spent a lot of time assuring mine that they were much beloved members of my family, not "slaves". To be honest, I've never been a huge fan of animals-as-people adult books (eg, Watership Down), althoug......more

Goodreads review by Lincoln on May 11, 2015

An interesting entry in the dystopian science fiction genre, this novel took two premises that usually populate the most cliche kind of sci-fi (giant ants and animals becoming intelligent), and treated them with the utmost seriousness. That alone made me want to love this novel but there were a few......more

This book annoyed the hell out of me. It started out entertainingly enough. I was interested in the ants' method of advancing the animals to become sentient, and actually more human-like.* I was even ok with the war against the humans. But when the whole religion thing came up, the book lost me. I'm......more

Ever pick up a book, knowing even before you start that you're destined to love it? Ever have it exceed even those lofty expectations? Mort(e) was sent to me several (many) months back. I'd been chatting with a PR person at SoHo Press about a different book I'd reviewed, and she mentioned Mort(e). "It......more

Quotes

“With sly references to Orwell’s Animal Farm, debut novelist Repino puts a nicely modern postapocalyptic overlay on the fable of animals taking over the world…Steering clear of allegorical artifices, Repino effectively harnesses animal emotions within the anthropomorphic context…An engrossing morality tale with unexpected depths.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Animal Farm set in a postapocalyptic world based on interspecies rivalry rather than communism, with a little religion on the side, this imaginative story can be taken as a somewhat satirical examination of the role of the individual in society. Highly recommended.” Library Journal

“That a novel about the war between ants and humans with house pets as warriors would be so stunningly believable and, above all, affecting is a testament to what a wonderful book Robert Repino has written. Mort(e) is one of the craziest, most inventive novels I’ve read in a long time.” James Scott, author of The Kept

“In our age of first person diary-like-entry novels, Mort(e) is both stunningly original and wonderfully heartfelt. It’s a wild ride of a book from a skilled writer I will now be following.” Shane Jones, author of Light Boxes

"Mort(e) is wonderful and weird, never saccharine and always startling.” Cat Rambo, author of Near + Far

“Combining elements of Orwellian parable and sci-fi/action thriller, Mort(e) is a tautly constructed indictment of much that is wrong with society and a celebration of much that is right.” Matthew Gallaway, author of The Metropolis Case
