Synopsis

“An addictively satisfying, deeply amusing, dirty-ass masterpiece.”
—William Gibson“A sharp-edged urban fantasy, drenched in blood and cynicism, tipping its hat to Sam Peckinpah, Raymond Chandler, and the anti-heroes of Hong Kong cinema….A bravura performance.”
—San Francisco Chronicle“I couldn’t put it down.”
—Charlaine HarrisSandman Slim has arrived—a wild and weird, edge-of-your-seat supernatural roller-coaster rider that propels author Richard Kadrey to the forefront of the fantasy, thriller, and a host of other literary genres. This spellbinding, utterly remarkable tale of a vengeful magician/hitman’s return from hell is part H.P. Lovecraft, part Christopher Moore, part Jim Butcher, and totally, unabashedly dark, twisted, and hilarious.

MacLeod Andrews's performance is excellent! Each character clearly has their own voice and Andrews seems able to do any accent. Too bad booksfree.com doesn't give the narrator credit for reading the audiobook. Another review states the desire for Ron Perlman to play Sandman Slim in a movie version of the book. Lets hope not. The story takes place between Christmas and New Years in LA, eleven years after nineteen year old Magician Jimmy Stark was trapped in hell, by six magicians he called friends. Stark narrates the story and he swears. A lot. He also eats, sleeps and changes his clothes. In a lot of these books the hero runs amock and never does anything human even though they are. This adds a lot to the Stark character. Richard Kadrey the author of Sandman Slim has given us a thirty year old character with the knowledge and education of a fifty year old. Was all of this education aquired in hell? Stark is all over the place with quotes and titles from songs, books and films. There are times in the story when you wish Stark would just shut up and stop being a philosopher. Stark and his friends are likable and I will read the second book KILL THE DEAD. There was enough of a cliff hanger and I'm curious. If you like Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden and Charlie Houston's Joe Pitts. You should like Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim. No reason you need me to give you the same information other reviews have. NOTE...In the beginning of the story you meet a black female character. We are told she doesn't have any hair. Later in the story someone grabs her hair. Kadrey also puts this female character in the beginning of a storyline when they meet the guy on the thirteen floor for the first time. Then he doesn't give her an exit. She just doesn't talk anymore. Considering how over detailed this book is these two things with the same character are odd.

Having recently exited Hell, Stark is rather peeved at those who had sent him there for eleven years, and is eager for revenge. He has a fondness for stealing cars and making mayhem. Los Angeles comes in for some laugh-out-loud funny noir treatment. Richard Kadrey - from his site Richard Kadrey has......more

Ever read a book and find yourself thinking, "This is pretty good, but it could have been face-melting awesome."? This is one of those books for me. I really liked it, but found myself picking some serious nits while reading it. Stark was a magician (a real magician, not a sawing-a-woman-in-half kind......more

*** 4.25 *** "I'm hard on things. Everything ends up broken, ripped apart, modified, stuck together or shot to shit. I'd be naked as Adam and cold as a polar bear if it weren't for duct tape." A gritty, unapologetic, demonic Pulp Fiction! What a fun read! Not for the tender hearted nor the young, but......more

Ohhh, "Sandman Slim", what a date it was! My first encounter with dear Mr. Stark aka lovely Sandman Slim was when I read the great reviews of Sarah, the Murderous 💜 I was deeply charmed and intrigued, well mostly because my latest date with Daniel Faust wasn’t very gripping for me and I was looking......more
