Synopsis

A collection of enchanting stories blending folklore, humor, and the supernatural. The titular tale follows Ichabod Crane, a superstitious schoolmaster, as he vies for Katrina Van Tassel’s affection in the eerie village of Sleepy Hollow, culminating in his encounter with the Headless Horseman. Alongside this classic, Irving weaves tales like "Rip Van Winkle," where a man awakens to a changed world after a mysterious slumber. These stories explore themes of American identity, rural life, and the power of legend, showcasing Irving’s mastery of atmosphere and storytelling. Together, they form a timeless celebration of imagination and tradition.

About Washington Irving

Washington Irving (1783–1859) was an American author, short story writer, essayist, poet, travel book writer, biographer, and columnist. He is best known for writing the stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Early on, he was a contributor to the Morning Chronicle, published Salmagundi, and served as editor of Analetic magazine in Philadelphia and New York. In 1809, he published the comical A History of New York under the name "Dietrich Knickerbocker." Eleven years later, he published a collection of stories entitled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., which allowed him to become a full-time writer. Other books written by Irving are Bracebridge Hall, Chronicles of the Conquest of Granada, A Tour of the Prairies, and The Life of George Washington, a five-volume title.

And then I read The Fold, which has this exchange between a high school student and his teacher in the first few pages:“Ich......more

I remember the movies and I think I recall we read and analyzed this short story in school. I think it was around Halloween as a fun activity but I really could not remember the story at all. It was a favourite of my husband's but I could not find his old childhood copy anywhere around the house. Lu......more
