Synopsis

The Silver Pigs is the classic novel that introduced readers around the world to Marcus Didius Falco, a private informer with a knack for trouble, a tendency for bad luck, and a frequently inconvenient drive for justice. When Marcus Didius Falco encounters the young and very pretty Sosia Camillina in the Forum, he senses immediately that there is something amiss. When she confesses that she is fleeing for her life, Falco offers to help her and, in doing so, gets himself mixed up in a deadly plot involving stolen ingots, dangerous and dark political machinations, and, most hazardous of all, one Helena Justina—a brash, indomitable senator’s daughter connected to the very traitors that Falco has sworn to expose.

THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE AUDIO BOOK 2 DISCS NOT CONNECTED. WOULD BE GREAT IF IT WERE COMPLETE...I ENJOYED THE DRAMATIC INTERPRETATION....WILL HAVE TO GO TO BBC TO SEE IF I CAN OBTAIN THE ENTIRE BOOK SET.

Way back in early 2015, I read Lindsey Davis' The Ides of April. I liked it, and since it featured the daughter of Marcus Didius Falco, I thought I would eventually get around to the original character. The Silver Pigs is the first of many Falco novels that Davis wrote over a period of more than 20......more

The Silver Pigs is fun to read. And if you're looking to read to relax, there's no better praise. As I mentioned in my comment, the voice and tone reminded me of Glen Cook's Garrett, P.I. series sans the fantasy element. Even more strongly, I'm reminded of a Roman Rockford Files, which may be brillia......more

Enjoyed the reread. I always find new plot points or historical references that I've missed. This time it was Vitellius and mushy peas.......more

'Silver Pigs' begins at a run and it really doesn't let up. Marcus Didius Falco, a 70 AD Roman private informer whose usual jobs involve following young philandering wives for rich old husbands, finds himself in the middle of a mystery of murder and mayhem involving important senators of high rank a......more

3.5 stars. A clever and fun historical spin on the traditional mystery genre. Enough new is added to the expected to make it worth your time! I enjoyed the insights into life circa 70 BCE Rome, as well as those chapters that depict “primitive” Britain at the time. The protagonist/”detective” is an app......more

Quotes

“One of the most original and endearing books since the first Flashman.” Time Out (New York)

“The Rome of Davis’ imagination is licentious and entertaining.” San Jose Mercury News

“Historical mystery fans will find a lot to enjoy in the Marcus Didius Falco series by Lindsey Davis. The Silver Pigs introduces the cocky and astute Falco…Davis has plenty of room to give life to dusty, dirty squalor and architectural splendor alike. When readers have finished with Falco’s stories, they can quickly keep the intrigue going with a more recent spin-off series, the “Flavia Albia” mysteries.” Library Journal

“The intriguing premise of a detective story set in Imperial Rome in 70 AD is unpredictably fulfilled by Davis’ hero-gumshoe…Wisecracking in ancient idiom, Falco seems, nevertheless, a recognizably up-to-date young man, one whose honor, humor, and humanity work him quickly into readers’ affection. Davis’ story, though couched in period detail, rewards as much for deft handling of plot and depth of characterization as for its historicity.” Publishers Weekly

“The whole thing is splendid. It has everything: mystery, pace, wit, [and] fascinating scholarship.” Ellis Peters, Cartier Diamond Dagger Award–winning author
